“Loving v. Virginia”: An Opera About Love, Justice, and American History
Virginia Opera presents a moving and timely production in its 2024–2025 season: “Loving v. Virginia”, an opera based on the landmark civil rights case that changed the course of history in the United States.
A Love Story That Defied the Law
This opera tells the powerful true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple who, in the 1950s, broke Virginia state law by marrying legally in Washington, D.C., and returning to their home in Caroline County, Virginia. At the time, interracial marriage was banned by state law.
After being arrested and exiled from their home, the Lovings began a legal battle that culminated in the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision, Loving v. Virginia, which struck down laws prohibiting interracial marriage as unconstitutional.
A Work That Moves and Teaches
With music by Damien Geter and a libretto by Jessica Murphy Moo, Loving v. Virginia is a stirring and intimate opera that highlights the power of love to overcome hatred and injustice.
This production combines minimalist staging, emotionally rich vocals, and a compelling narrative that encourages audiences to reflect on civil rights, equality, and the endurance of love in the face of adversity.
