Every May, Washington, D.C. becomes a vibrant hub of international culture with Passport DC, a festival that celebrates the city's diverse global community. Organized by Events DC, this free event gives visitors a unique opportunity to explore the world through embassy open houses, street festivals, cultural exhibits, and international cuisine—all in the heart of the nation’s capital.
What is Passport DC?
Passport DC is an annual celebration of Washington, D.C.’s diplomatic and cultural richness. Throughout the month of May—International Cultural Awareness Month—embassies and cultural institutions open their doors to the public, offering immersive experiences such as:
Embassy open houses
Street festivals
Live performances and cultural displays
Interactive exhibitions and workshops
Global food tastings
Thousands of visitors take part in these activities, enjoying an educational and entertaining experience that promotes cross-cultural understanding.
Highlights of Passport DC 2025
Around the World Embassy Tour – Saturday, May 3
Embassies from across the globe (excluding the European Union) welcome visitors to experience their cultures firsthand. Enjoy traditional music, dance, art, and food as you "travel" the world in a single day.
EU Open House – Saturday, May 10
Hosted by the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, this open house invites guests to explore the embassies of EU member nations. Enjoy authentic European food, art, film, and live entertainment.
Flower Mart – May 2–3
Held at the Washington National Cathedral, this springtime market features flowers, gifts, family-friendly activities, and food, along with rides on a historic carousel—all set in a charming outdoor setting.
International City Food Festival – May 2–3
Complementing the first weekend of Passport DC, this food festival highlights global cuisine in a fun, family-friendly environment, showcasing the city’s international culinary diversity.
Fiesta Asia – Saturday, May 17
Part of the celebrations for Asian Heritage Month, this vibrant street fair features Asian crafts, live performances, food, and more, celebrating the rich traditions and cultures of Asia.
