Into the Woods Comes to Life in Charlottesville This Summer.
Starting June 27, 2025, the Virginia Theatre Festival in Charlottesville invites you to step into a world where fairy tales collide in Stephen Sondheim’s enchanting and thought-provoking musical masterpiece, Into the Woods.
This Tony Award-winning production brings together beloved storybook characters — Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack (of beanstalk fame), the Baker and his Wife, and many more — in a richly woven tale about wishes, consequences, and what happens after “happily ever after.”
A Classic Reimagined
With its unforgettable score and deep emotional resonance, Into the Woods is far more than a fairy tale. It’s a bold exploration of human desire, community, and the price we pay to get what we want. Sondheim’s lyrics and music lead audiences through a darkly whimsical forest, where every wish comes with a cost — and every path taken leads to new revelations.
A Director with Broadway Pedigree
This year’s production will be helmed by Matthew Steffens, a UVA alum and Virginia Theatre Festival veteran. Steffens directed the acclaimed 2023 VTF production of Cabaret and served as Associate Choreographer on the most recent Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Into the Woods. His vision and experience promise a vibrant, emotionally resonant take on this beloved classic.
A Summer Theater Highlight
Presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), this production of Into the Woods is poised to be a standout event of the Virginia arts calendar. Whether you're a longtime Sondheim fan or new to the musical, this is a chance to experience a magical journey filled with heart, humor, and haunting melodies.
